We are planning to post recipes to the blog weekly to help those of you who are seeking to incorporate healthier foods into your diet to further improve your health! This week’s recipes include a yummy, healthy salad dressing that is Laura’s favorite and raw cacao balls that were served on February 11th at Alpine’s free adjustment event.

Italian Vinaigrette

2/3 c. flax oil or extra-virgin olive oil or combination of the two

1/3 c. raw apple cider vinegar (available from health food stores and some supermarkets)

1/4 to 1/2 t. good quality sea salt (Realsalt or Himalayan or Celtic are best)

1 t. or to taste Italian seasoning or favorite herbs (basil, oregano, thyme, etc.)

Mix or shake in glass container and serve! Will separate in the fridge so must shake before use. Also, olive oil will solidify in the fridge so you need to let it sit out a few minutes before using. You can also add the everything to a blender except the vinegar and while the blender is running, slowly add the vinegar through the hole in the top. This should emulsify the salad dressing and it shouldn’t separate. Recipe is adapted from the Body Ecology Diet Dressing Recipe.

Raw Cacao Bliss Balls

1 c. raw cacao powder

2 c. unsweetened shredded coconut

12 pitted dates

1/3 c. water

1/3 c. coconut oil

1/4 c. hemp seeds (I used sesame, can try other seeds if desired)

dash vanilla, cinnamon, and sea salt

stevia to taste (or other sweetener, maybe agave or honey, depending on ability to process sugars)

Process dates and water in blender til paste forms (will still be a little chunky). Process shredded coconut and coconut oil in food processor until chunky mixture forms. Mix date paste and cacao in bowl, add seeds, vanilla, cinnamon, salt and stevia and mix together. Add coconut mixture; mash together with hands (I added it all back to the food processor and pulsed until mixed). Form into balls and roll in coconut or chopped nuts or seeds. Refrigerate 10-20 minutes and serve.

This is not very sweet, very rich, dark chocolate flavor! Lots of fiber from coconut, seeds, and cacao, and good fats from shredded coconut and coconut oil!

Today is going to be a hot one, it is about time, summer is finally upon us. Now some of you are going to be going to a bbq every single weekend and some even more than that. I would not be doing my job if I didn’t throw a plug out there to make sure to balance the bad with the good. When our diets are challenged with Aunt Linda’s Cool whip infused fruit salad and uncle Jim’s baby back ribs it gets to be that much more important that we take care of the basics. One way to stay on track is no matter what atrocities you eat at the bbq make sure every morning starts off as good as humanly possible. Our favorite way in our house is with a green smoothie every morning, start your day alkaline and with all the wonderful nutrients that the fresh fruits and vitamins supply. If you can’t find time to make a green smoothie come in and grab some nano greens it is 10 servings of fruits and veggies and you will love the way you feel.

Next are you taking your fish oil? Before you look for the next magic pill that will clear up your skin, melt off the fat and improve your memory, make sure you are doing a high quality wild caught cold pressed fish oil.

Finally how is your bodies alignment? You will get more out of your nutrition, more out of your exercise and more out of your life if your nervous system is in balance and you are pain free. Enjoy your summer but don’t forget to take care of yourself. As alway get healthy get happy and help a friend.

More than 80 million people (approximately 1 in 4) are believed to suffer from such discomfort at least once a week and two of the most successful prescriptions in history are for digestive discomfort. Though many suffer, few have to. Nearly every digestive complaint is caused from an inability to properly digest the food(s) consumed.

The simple solution in such cases is enzymes. Enzymes are responsible for breaking down the foods we eat, delivering the nutrients found in those foods to every cell of the body and re- moving any toxins or ingredients that may be in the food that the body will not derive any benefit from.

Symptoms Of Poor Digestion
• Gas
• Bloating
• Indigestion
• Heartburn
• Fatigue
• Poor Sleep
• Allergies
• Candida

Life’s Energy
Enzymes do so much more than relieve the symptoms often associated with digestive distress or disorders. They are the foundation to good heath. Enzymes are energized protein molecules. They have been called the “spark of life”, the “vitality of life” and the “energy of life”. The word enzyme literally means life. When we wake up tired, catch a cold, can’t recall the name of our firstborn child or find ourselves sleeping during an important seminar, we don’t say, “I wish I had more enzymes,” we say, “I wish I had more energy.” To fully comprehend the benefits we must first understand what digestion is, and the vital role enzymes (energy) play in this process.

Digestion: The Basics
Digestion begins in the mouth where the act of chewing breaks down and grinds the food into smaller pieces to be swallowed. Think of the mouth as a food processor where mixing and grinding take place. Here is where three different types of an enzyme called amylase are secreted to digest the carbohydrates we eat.

We then swallow the food and it travels to the stomach. There are two sections of the stomach. The Cardiac section (upper) is what Dr. Howell called the food enzyme stomach. This is where the majority of the carbohydrate digestion occurs due to the activity of the amylase found in the saliva. Only the raw foods we eat that have not been cooked or processed are digested in this section of the stomach. This is because these foods contain the enzymes that nature provides to break down the proteins, fats and carbohydrates that are part of that particular food. The food stays here about 30 to 45 minutes then enters the lower section or Pyloric section of the stomach.

The Pyloric section of the stomach is where the enzyme pepsin and HCL (Hydrochloric acid) are secreted for protein digestion. The amount of protein consumed and the efficiency of the individual’s digestive system will dictate the length of time the food remains in this portion of the stomach. It is usually about two hours. The combined activity of Hydrochloric acid, pepsin and muscular movement result in a thoroughly mixed watery solution called chyme.

Chyme leaves the stomach and enters the small intestine. When the chyme enters the small intestine (duodenum) it is mixed with the enzyme lipase from the pancreas and bile secreted by the gallbladder for fat digestion. The acid is neutralized by bicarbonate ions, which the pancreas also manufactures and secretes. It is at this point that the body takes a type of inventory of what we have eaten and what has been digested. It then determines the additional amount of enzymes (or energy) that will be needed to finish the process. The pancreas will continue to manufacture and secrete them as needed. This is called the law of adaptive secretion. The body will only make the amount of enzymes required to digest, assimilate and transport the fats, proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals found in the foods we consume.

As the food continues to travel through the intestinal tract it finally enters the large intestine. The large intestine is basically responsible for absorbing water and ionic compounds (electrolytes). Much of this is actually re-absorbing what the body has provided in the way of gastric juices. The large intestine is also home to a number of different kinds of bacteria. These beneficial bacteria live off of some of the foods that make it this far without being digested. Finally the waste is eliminated. This entire process normally takes 3-10 days.

80% of your energy
When we eat a meal, we often take for granted the process that is initiated that we casually call digestion. The fact is that 80% of all the energy we will use in our entire lifetime will be spent on this amazing process. This leaves a mere 20% to handle all other processes of the body. Imagine if you could get back even a small percentage of that energy to assist in immune function, endocrine function or cardiovascular function. The possibility exists that it could change both the length of your life and the way in which you live it.

Digestive Problems
The symptoms that often occur which cause digestive discomfort are the result of an inability to efficiently break down and absorb the essential nutrients found in those foods. For example, the common gas and bloating is often a problem breaking down carbohydrates in the form of raw vegetables or beans. The acid indigestion is often caused by a problem breaking down protein. Though many people may tend to dismiss such “minor” symptoms as an inconvenience, it is important to provide the body with the support it needs during these times so as not to develop anything more serious over time.

Increase Your Energy
As you have no doubt figured out by now, the more we eat, the more energy our body will spend digesting what we have consumed. For many who chose most of their foods from a fast food menu or eat large portions of cooked and processed foods they are spending needless amounts of energy on the difficult job they have forced upon their digestive system. One of the best choices we can make is to eat living foods. Raw foods have the ability to digest 5%-75% of them-selves in the Cardiac section of the stomach. This one act alone will free up enormous amounts of energy and reduce the common symptoms of digestive distress (gas, bloating, indigestion and heartburn) while supporting other body functions and helping maintain optimal health. Of course, as mentioned earlier, another simple solution to this energy crisis is to provide the body with supplemental digestive enzymes with every meal. These enzyme supplements have the ability to assist the body in breaking down or digesting the foods we consume, regardless of our food choices.

Look for an enzyme supplement that contains high active units of numerous enzymes. The four main categories of enzymes responsible for the digestion of proteins, fats, carbohydrates and fiber are called proteases, lipases amylases and cellulases. Though most companies label enzymes in “active units” to indicate potency, it is best to look for a product that uses multiple enzymes per category (for example: four proteases instead of just one. May say thera-blend next to each of these essential enzymes.). This will greatly increase the effectiveness of the product.

Contains excerpts from “Alkalize or Die”, by Dr. T.A. Baroody, Jr

ACIDOSIS is the basic foundation of all disease. We need to understand the simple process of alkalizing our body and the important role a properly alkalized body plays in restoring and maintaining our overall health. Our glands and organs function properly in exact proportion to the amount of alkaline and acid levels in our system.

THE IMPACT OF ACIDOSIS ON YOUR ORGANS:

HEART

The heart is one of the most alkaline-dependent organs in the body. It is partly enervated by the vagus nerve which functions best in an alkaline environment. Correct heartbeat is altered by acid wastes. These wastes rob the blood of proper oxygenation and degeneration of the heart follows. An alkaline system creates an ideal heart function.

STOMACH

Digestive difficulties (belching, bloating, sensitivity at the waist, intestinal gas, regurgitation, hiccups, lack or limitation of appetite, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, colic in children) may indicate vagus nerve problems and possible hiatus hernia syndrome, which can produce acid residue throughout the system. Hiatus hernia can quickly reduce necessary hydrochloric acid in the stomach. Without proper hydrochloric acid breakdown of foods, the foods become too acidic.

LIVER

The liver has over three hundred functions, including processing acid toxins from the blood and producing numerous alkaline enzymes for the system and is your first line of defense against any poisons. All the nourishment obtained through the gastrointestinal tract enters the blood by way of the liver. The load on the liver is much heavier when acid waste products are constantly floating in the blood. If the liver becomes too congested with protein acid wastes, death is imminent.

PANCREAS

The pancreas is highly dependent on correct alkaline diet. All aspects of pancreatic function reduce excess acidity and regulate blood sugar balance. To have proper blood sugar balance, you must maintain a primarily alkaline-forming diet.

SMALL INTESTINES

The Peyer’s Patches, in the upper portion of the small intestines are crucial to life. They are essential for proper assimilation of food and producing lymphocytes for the lymphatic system’s wide ranging nodal network. They also produce large amounts of the enzyme “chyle”, which is a major alkalizing substance. The uninterrupted flow of chyle into the system is crucial. Too much acid waste production from acid-forming foods is a great burden on the Peyer’s Patches, which lessens the production of chyle.

KIDNEYS

In an adult, about 1 liter of blood per minute passes through the kidneys. By executing their primary duty, the kidneys keep the blood alkaline and extract acid. Kidneys that are over-stressed with too much acidity create kidney stones, which are composed of waste acid cells and mineral salts that have become gummed together in a waste acid substance. Therefore, by reducing acid-forming products from entering the body, the chances are better that you can avoid this painful condition.

COLON

The colon must be kept clean of accumulated acid wastes. Poisons collect on the colon walls and in cases of diarrhea or constipation will harden and reabsorb into the bloodstream. Good bowel action (complete elimination) must be done at least 2 times per day.

LYMPHATIC SYSTEM

There are 600-700 lymph glands in the body. Lymph fluid carries nutrition to the cells and removes acid waste products. Lymph fluid flows best in an alkaline environment. When the body is overly acidic, it slows, creating one of the most chronic, long-term, life-threatening situations. Gradually, the lymph dries and begins to form very tiny to very large adhesions throughout the tissues. These adhesions can interfere not only with lymph fluid but with blood flow as well. Hindered lymph flow increases tissue acid storage. Not drinking enough purified water will also slow the lymph. Waste products from foods that are not properly digested are reabsorbed into general circulation via the lymphatic ducts of the small intestine. In addition, bowel movements that do not completely clear the body of its daily poisons are also reabsorbed.

HOW NEGATIVE EMOTIONS CREATE ACIDITY:

Have you ever been so upset with someone or something that you get an upset stomach? All negative emotions create an acidic environment. Have you ever heard anyone say you are letting your problems “eat away at you” or “get the best of you”?

Fear is the underlining cause of most disease. It will undermine your life and your health. Fear causes anger. Anger causes hate. Hate will consume you with continual suffering. Love and understanding cleanse and heal the body creating an alkaline environment within you.

WHAT CAN YOU DO?

EXERCISE
Moderate exercise is alkalizing to the body. Excessive exercise (past the point of exhaustion) can create an acidic problem due to lactic acid buildup. People who are acidic usually feel worse from exercise because their detoxification organs are not working properly due to excessive acid in the tissues. Yet without exercise, acid and toxin buildup are likely.

QUALITY AIR
As the saying goes – “every step you take, every breath you take …”.
If your environment is polluted with chemicals, dust, smoke, pet dander, mold, micro-organisms, then much of your energy reserve will go just in detoxifying. Today, even in the forest and near the ocean, the amount of negative ions are much lower than they were only a few decades ago. Also, since we sealed buildings to conserve energy and started making our homes and furnishings with synthetic materials, the number of cases of asthma and chronic fatigue have risen dramatically.

FOOD COMBINING
Food combining is key to creating an alkaline environment because when you combine properly you reduce putrefaction in the body creating a more alkaline condition.

ALKALIZING DIETARY SUPPLEMENTATION
When you purchase supplements you must ask yourself what your goal is and will these supplements actually help alkalize and remove acid from your body. Green drinks are very helpful in filtering out toxins and acidity in the body.

ALKALINE DIET
Eating an alkaline diet is very powerful in making everything else work better. In general, it is important to eat a diet that contains both acidic and alkalizing foods. People vary, but for most, the ideal diet is 75 percent alkalizing and 25 percent acidifying (foods by volume).

One of the most common questions I get asked is what supplements should I be taking for this condition? I get asked this question daily and most of the time my answer is the same no matter what the condition. When a certain part of the body is having problems due to adaptations to the stresses we put it under does it make sense to treat that part of the body and hope that it rectifies the situation or is the solution to strengthen the body. There are 4 main supplements I recommend to every patient, they are not for your heart, although they are good for your heart. They are not for your joints, although they are good for your joints. They are not for you_______, although they are good for your _______, you fill in the blank. They are the basic things that are not in our diet that if we were to take would decrease the amount of stress that the body is under thus soothing the effected organs that are causing whatever symptoms that are ailing the patient.
First is fish oil. I always have patients ask is there anything more that I could be taking to help with _____, my first response is always, well, are you taking your fish oil. More times than not they are not taking it. Fish oil is the most important supplement you can take, my children have taken it every day of their life. If you Google “benefits of fish oil” it will be so broad spectrum you will swear it is a magic pill. It helps with blood pressure, pain, inflammation, depression, joints, arthritis and the list goes on and on. The second thing about fish oil is that not all fish oils are the same. The big thing right now with the health gurus is the krill oil. Krill are little shrimp like creatures that eat phytoplankton; the phytoplankton is where all the good stuff comes from. I will not debate with the gurus as to whether or not fish oil is as good as krill oil but I will say that I have tried krill oil and did not notice a difference between that and a high quality fish oil. The krill oil is also much more expensive. The key to fish oil is making sure that you get the highest quality. I like to compare fish oil to boots. I love to hike up in the mountains and one of the most important pieces of equipment is your boots. High quality boots save your feet and ankles and allow you to hike farther and harder than say walmart boots. Fish oil is the same way; never buy your fish oil from a big chain like that. Fish oil is very delicate oil it must be processed correctly and it must be packaged and shipped correctly, skipping any of these steps is a big mistake. Also many of the cheaper fish oils are processed from farm raised fish that have not been able to eat the krill so they don’t have the good things in them. Moral of the story buy a high quality fish oil with a good reputation. Carlson’s is a good brand that can be found in health food stores and there are other great brands that only sell through doctors.
Second on the list are greens. At our clinic we take nanogreens it is a powder you put in water that has 10 servings of vegetables in it and has the right ones. What are the right ones? The two most important ones are chlorella and spirulina; they are sea veggies and are both among the true super foods on our planet. I don’t care which greens you take just make sure it is a good one and make sure it has those two super foods.
Third Magnesium. Magnesium is involved as a precursor to over 300 enzymatic processes in the body and 90% of Americans are found to be magnesium deficient. The magnesium you take is kind of like the fish oil, you have to be very careful about which one you buy, but for totally different reasons. Most magnesium that you will find will be in a synthetic form that your body can not use and will just lead to loose bowls. They best magnesium is a citrate. One again you can find it thru a good health food store or through a good nutritionally minded doctor.
Forth, is probiotics. Hippocrates said that disease begins in the gut. Likewise health begins in the gut. Proper gastrointestinal health is essential to every function and system in the body. Probiotic are good bacteria that aid in digestion, and protect the GI tract from foreign invaders and infections.
Now you know some of the most basic things about nutrition so the next time you run into someone who is having a problem with_____. Tell them not to worry about ______, and to strengthen their body thru proper nutrition, a healthy spine and nervous system, and a great attitude.

Hydration
If I were to take water and have Dr. Oz talk about it on Oprah, telling about all its wonderful healing properties, we could sell it $40 for a months supply and it would be true. All the wonderful healthy disease fighting properties would be completely true and you could make a infomercial 24 hours long of all the people who’s health had improved thanks to this miracle. The problem is people are still looking for a miracle and water is free.
What does it mean to be dehydrated?
Being dehydrated does not mean that you do not have enough water in your belly it means that you do not have enough water in your cells. Your body is made of cells and the cells are made up of mostly water.
If you want to make a huge difference in your health try the two week challenge. It takes two weeks to properly hydrate all the cells in the body and one day to lose it. So for two weeks drink the proper amount of water and nothing else.
The proper amount of water is your body weight divided in half, converted to oz. So if you weight 200lbs, half of that would be 100lbs. Convert that to oz. Would mean you need to drink 100 oz a day. If you decide to cheat and have coffee or soda or tea that is ok you just need to make it up. To do this take the amount of the offending beverage, double it and add it to your water intake for the next two days.
You will love the changes your body will go thru when you properly hydrate yourself. It is one of the first steps to changing your health.

Burst
If I were to tell you that there is a supplement out there that was so amazing that it has been scientifically proven to reverse ageing, burn fat, build lean muscle, reverse arthritis, build bone density, heal sports injuries faster, treat multiple sclerosis, treat fibromyalgia, improve immune function, increase energy, decrease winkles, help skin tone, in short it has been proven to be the fountain of youth. You would either be lined up at the door or you wouldn’t believe it is true. I have some good news some bad news and then some more good news. The good news is that this supplement does exist the bad news is that it is illegal and the following good news is that you don’t need to buy it because your body produces it anyways.
Human Growth Hormone is the miracle supplement, it receives a lot of media attention from athletes who illegally take it to enhance their performance. Back to the good news, your body naturally produces hGh, my purpose in writing this article it to tell you how to increase the levels that your body produces.
Exercise. Wait, wait don’t run away this is going to be much easier than you think. Two of the most common reasons why people don’t exercise is that 1st they don’t have the time, I am right there with you, it isn’t just the time at the gym it is also the travel time the extra shower and the insecurities from working out next to people who are there 3 hours a day every day. The other common reason is that we lose our motivation. It is easy to get exited and start to exercise but then other priorities come up and steal our momentum. Burst training is the answer to both of these excuses. You can get in amazing shape and produce more growth hormone in three minuets a day of burst training than you can spending hours at the gym or from running 10 miles a day.
The keys to burst training are;
1st Target Heart Rate. Subtract your age from the number 220 and that is your maximum heart rate. So if you were 40 years old 220-40=180. 180 is your maximum heart rate. Target heart rate for burst training is 90% of your maximum. This is figured out by taking your( max hear rate – your resting heart rate) x .90 + your resting heart rate. It sounds more difficult than it is. If you were 40 years old and you had a resting heart rate of 70 beats per minuet. The equation would look like this (180-70).90 +70=169 so your target heart rate for burst training would be 169 beats per minuet. It doesn’t have to be right to that number every time but it should be within 10 bpm. Heart rate is the most important part of burst training, at least for our purposes of increasing the amount of hGh our body is producing.
2nd Warm up. Take a few minuets to warm up and get ready for the exercise. Maybe some light jogging in place or some ballistic stretching.
3rd Intervals. Intervals of what, what is the secret exercise you have been reading this whole article to find out. There is no secret exercise. The exercise is whatever you want to do to quickly get your heart rate to the target range. It is going to be different for everyone. Some people if you are in really good shape are going to need to do much more than others to get into that target range, for an older person maybe sitting in the chair with some 5 lbs weights will do the trick. If you are an elite athlete it may be 200 yard sprints. That is the beauty, is that it doesn’t matter.
There needs to be 3-5 intervals and the intervals need to last anywhere from 10 seconds all the way up to 1 minuet. The Target HR must be met as fast as you can, no loafing. The one minuet time frame is for an elite athlete. If you are not an elite athlete adjust it accordingly. I find that 20-30 seconds fits most people. So if you are in pretty good shape your workout would look like this.
Burst for 30 seconds
Rest for 30
Burst for 30
Rest for 30
Burst for 30
Cool Down and stretch.
That is the whole workout. It can be modified for whatever you need it to be but the key is the production of growth hormone and the key to that is that you push yourself for just a short amount of time.
What you can expect. Remember at the start of this article when I said that motivation was 1 of the 2 main factors why people don’t work out. The lack of motivation comes from lack of results. If you are not losing weight, if you are not getting any stronger how easy is it to keep going. On the other side when you do your burst training you will find quick returns, this will motivate you to keep going. With exercise it is very important to be consistent. For those who read my article on philosophy health is a series of choices stacked up on top of each other. Make the choice today to do a burst. I do mine at lunch time in my dress cloths.
We will be having a exercise class tomorrow night June 24, 2009 at 6. Wear good shoes and bring a friend

Philosophy
There is no magic pill. When it comes to health there is no magic pill, no magic adjustment, no magic exercise. There are just a sequence of events that are either healing or destructive. These events can fall anywhere on the spectrum, from extremely destructive like a car crash, or mildly destructive like a cup of coffee. Likewise healing events can fall anywhere on the spectrum from something extremely healing like a juice feast to something mildly healing like a walk in the park. Thus we begin to see that health or sickness is made up of a series of choices and these choices shape our life. I am not saying that you must make perfect choices all of the time I am just saying that the good should outnumber the bad. What percentage of good vs. bad decisions you need to make in order to heal depends primarily on the level of your health and the processes going on in your body.
There are three main areas of insult to your system and thus there are three main areas of focus when healing your system. The three areas are Physical, Chemical and Emotional. A car wreck has severe physical ramifications on your body, like any injury, tissues are damaged and must be repaired for the body to be able to function again. Other areas of physical insult include misalignments of your spine, not getting proper exercise, and not getting enough sleep. Our nervous system is the master system in the body, it controls every function of every hormone, organ, gland, and tissue. Misalignments in the spine cause interference in the nervous system. This interference causes a decrease in the nervous systems ability to properly regulate itself, this leads to the breakdown of the body. That is the value of chiropractic. Many of you have sought out chiropractic for pain relief, and it will do that, but the value of chiropractic is its ability to help you regulate the master system in the body.
The chemical side of health is often the hardest one to reign in, and the one that is focused on the most, but when it is broken down to an elemental level is quite simple. Good in good out. When you put good things in your body good health comes out, when you put bad things in bad health comes out. You can not expect to eat processed foods for 20 years and come away with the same blood chemistry as someone who ate whole organic foods. It goes back to choices. Health is a series of good choices over time. The problem that I see most people running into is that they want the best of both worlds, they want to put bad things into their body, take a magic pill or two(maybe pharmaceutical, or the next miracle vitamin) and then expect good health in return. That is not how the body works, if you put in bad things, with a little bit of the good things, you get slightly above horrible health.
Emotional stress is one that we are not going to touch on to much, not because it is not important but because I am less qualified to do so. This much I will say, take care of the physical and the chemical factors in your life and the emotional factors will begin to take care of themselves. I have seen depression and anxiety totally corrected with nothing more than chiropractic adjustments. I have also seen it corrected with nothing more than taking away the processed foods and additives. I have seen ADD and ADHD that is cured without the use of drugs, only by taking away the physical and chemical stresses in the children.
In conclusion I would like to remind everyone that the body is a miracle, that it has in it a power, that it can heal itself of any infirmity, no disease is out of its scope for healing. It needs no miracle pill, it is the miracle. Simply remove the things in your life that are keeping the miracle from fruition.
